MTN BUSHFIRE DRIVES RECORD TOURISM GROWTH FOR ESWATINI

MTN Bushfire 2026 has once again demonstrated its status as one of Africa’s most influential cultural tourism events, attracting thousands of visitors to Eswatini and generating significant economic activity across the Kingdom.

According to figures released following the festival, Eswatini recorded 50,403 arrivals during the MTN Bushfire weekend, comprising 28,392 international visitors and 22,011 EmaSwati living abroad. The figures represent an 11.5 percent increase compared to 2025, highlighting the festival’s growing appeal as a regional and international tourism drawcard.

Held from 29 to 31 May at House On Fire in Malkerns, the festival welcomed more than 23,000 attendees from over 55 countries. Visitors travelled from across Southern Africa, Europe and North America, with notable numbers arriving from South Africa, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Tanzania, the United States, France, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom and Germany.

The influx of visitors translated into strong occupancy rates across Eswatini’s tourism hubs. Accommodation establishments recorded occupancy levels of 73 percent in Mbabane, 80.5 percent in Ezulwini and 82.3 percent in Manzini during the festival period.

Air travel also experienced a boost, with King Mswati III International Airport receiving 32 aircrafts over two days leading into the event, compared to 23 aircraft during the same period in 2025.

The Ministry of Home Affairs noted that the increase in arrivals reflects the continued attractiveness of both the festival and Eswatini as a destination, while underscoring the country’s commitment to providing a welcoming environment for visitors.

Beyond tourism statistics, MTN Bushfire continues to be a major contributor to Eswatini’s economy. The festival generated E121.2 million for the economy in 2025, supporting businesses across the hospitality, transport, retail and creative sectors.

Local transport operators also benefited through the festival’s Park n’ Ride shuttle service, which carried 1,858 passengers this year, up from 1,700 in 2025. The service not only eased congestion but also created additional revenue opportunities for local operators.

MTN Bushfire Festival Director Jiggs Thorne said the event’s continued success reflects the collective efforts of attendees, sponsors, partners and the local community.

He noted that the festival’s impact extends beyond entertainment, helping to drive economic growth while showcasing Eswatini to audiences across Africa and the world.

As Eswatini continues to position itself as a leading cultural tourism destination, MTN Bushfire remains one of the country’s most powerful tourism assets, bringing international attention, investment and visitors to the Kingdom year after year.
