Some experiences live up to their reputation. Others quietly exceed it. For actor and Glam Troupe founder Mohale Motaung, his first MTN Bushfire was firmly the latter.
“I’ve always heard incredible things about MTN Bushfire and the way it brings together music, culture, creativity, and people from across Africa and the world,” he shared. “This was my first time attending, so I was excited to finally experience it for myself.”
Going in, he expected a great festival. What he found was something deeper. “What surprised me was how much more it felt like a community than an event. There was a genuine sense of connection, openness, and celebration that honestly exceeded my expectations.”
That sense of belonging defined his weekend in the Malkerns Valley. “OMG! The atmosphere was electric, but also incredibly welcoming,” he said. “It felt like thousands of people had come together to celebrate music, art, culture, and self-expression in a safe and inclusive environment.” Whether watching a performance, wandering the festival grounds, enjoying a drink, or meeting people from different countries, he found one constant: “There was always a sense of joy!”

Asked him about the highlights, and the diversity of the line-up is what stayed with him. “One of the standout moments for me was simply seeing the diversity of talent represented on the various stages,” he recalled. “I absolutely loved Uncle Waffles’ performance, as well as Kokoroko.”
Beyond the music, it was the human connection that moved him, watching people from different backgrounds connect through rhythm and culture, and savouring food cuisines from around the world. “The different food cuisines from different countries were so amazing.”
For Mohale, the magic of Bushfire is inseparable from the country that hosts it. While the festival weekend left limited time to explore, Eswatini is no stranger to him. “I have been to Eswatini a number of times, and what stands out the most for me is the warmth of the people and the natural beauty of the country,” he said. “Eswatini has a calmness and authenticity that is difficult to describe until you experience it for yourself. The landscapes are beautiful, the people are welcoming, and there is a strong sense of pride in the country’s culture and heritage.”
“I would describe Eswatini as one of Southern Africa’s hidden gems. It’s a country that feels both peaceful and vibrant at the same time.”

How would he describe the Kingdom to someone who has never been? He doesn’t hesitate. “Oh man! I would describe Eswatini as one of Southern Africa’s hidden gems. It’s a country that feels both peaceful and vibrant at the same time.” In one destination, he says, you can find beautiful scenery, rich cultural traditions, incredible hospitality, and world-class events like MTN Bushfire. “It feels authentic, unspoiled, and deeply connected to its identity.”
And would he recommend the experience to others? “Absolutely. MTN Bushfire is more than just a music festival. It’s an experience that exposes you to different cultures, perspectives, and people. It gives you an opportunity to discover Eswatini while creating memories you’ll carry long after the weekend is over.” Whether you come for the music, the culture, the food, the art, or simply the adventure, he believes there’s something that calls you back.
For Mohale, that call has already been answered. “I am definitely going again in 2027.”
