FROM A DINING TABLE TO A CROWN TRUSTED BY SWAZI WOMEN

Meet Melissa Adzigbli, the young Eswatini entrepreneur behind e.m.a_bonnets_by_lissa, a handmade brand stitching together hair care, heritage, and heart.

There is a quiet kind of courage in a woman who picks up a needle and thread not just to sew, but to solve a problem no one else is solving. For Afi Esinam Adzigbli, affectionately known as Melissa, that courage was born during the stillness of lockdownand it has only grown since.

Five years on, her brand has evolved from a one-machine setup at her dining table in Mbabane into a trusted name among Swazi women, protecting their crowns in both function and style.

A Lockdown Idea That Took Off

When COVID-19 slowed the world, Melissa found herself searching for a hair bonnet that truly worked.

“Hair bonnets weren’t really a thing back then,” she recalls. “I needed something that would stay on, protect different hairstyles, and still make you feel beautiful.”

So, she made one. Then a few more for friends and family. Demand grew organically, and by 2020, e.m.a_bonnets_by_lissa was officially born.

The name E.M.A. carries her initials and a deeper meaning, Enhance My Aurasymbolising identity, heritage, and self-expression. “When you wear one, you’re wearing a piece of Eswatini’s story,” she says.

Handmade with Purpose

What sets the brand apart is its intention. Melissa sources satin, silk, and African print fabrics locally from Mbabane and Manzini, keeping both production and impact within Eswatini.

“Hair care is heritage,” she explains. “Our grandmothers did it, our mothers did itand now we continue it in our own way.”

Each bonnet is carefully hand-cut, sewn with double seams, and fitted with adjustable elastic. Produced on a single sewing machine alongside her mother, every piece reflects patience and pride. “This isn’t fast fashion,” she adds. “It’s a relationship.”

Growing Beyond Bonnets

While bonnets remain the foundation, the brand has expanded into silk and crochet collections, including scrunchies, headpieces, sleepwear, and handcrafted garments for all ages.

Now in her sixth yearand balancing her studies in International Tourism, Melissa is focused on growth with impact. New collections are on the horizon, alongside a vision to empower other women.

“I want to inspire women in Eswatini to start the ideas they’ve been sitting on and not quit,” she says.

From a single sewing machine to a growing movement, Melissa’s journey is a reminder that purpose, when nurtured, can become something truly powerful.

“Ngiyabonga to everyone who has supported me since 2020,” she reflects. “You turned a lockdown idea into years of growth.”

Meet her at the Made in Eswatini Consumer Fair on May 1, 2026, along Dr. Sishayi Road in Mbabane, from 10 AM to 10 PM.
