Minister of Finance Neal Rijkenberg has underscored how the 2026/2027 National Budget is designed to unlock business growth, create jobs, and empower emaSwati. Speaking in Finance in Focus, the Minister highlighted upcoming developments such as the opening of the International Convention Centre (ICC) on April 24 , 2026 by His Majesty King Mswati III, describing it as a game changer for the country’s Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Events (MICE) sector.

Rijkenberg expressed confidence that the ICC will attract a steady flow of intergovernmental and regional conferences, positioning Eswatini to host at least two to three major events per week. This growth is expected to stimulate tourism-related opportunities, including increased demand for accommodation such as Airbnb-style offerings, while the anticipated reopening of the Royal Swazi is set to further boost employment within the hospitality sector.

Against this backdrop, Eswatini is set to host a major international gathering, marking a significant milestone for both its diplomatic standing and its MICE tourism sector. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation has confirmed that the Kingdom will welcome the Organisation of African, Caribbean and Pacific States (OACPS) African Regional Parliamentary Group meetings, alongside the First Session of the Joint Africa–EU Parliamentary Assembly (JPA), from 7 to 14 May 2026.

This announcement places Eswatini at the centre of one of the most influential inter-regional parliamentary engagements globally, reinforcing its emergence as a credible destination for high-level international events.

The Joint Parliamentary Assembly convenes elected representatives from all 79 OACPS member states and the 27 European Union countries, forming a 106-country partnership that represents more than 1.5 billion people. As the largest inter-regional parliamentary body of its kind, its presence in Eswatini signals growing international confidence in the Kingdom’s governance, stability, and hosting capacity.

For the local MICE sector, the impact is expected to be substantial. The week-long programme will attract senior government officials, parliamentarians, diplomats, and technical delegations, driving demand across accommodation, conference facilities, transport, catering, and cultural tourism experiences.

Eswatini’s Permanent Representative to the European Union, H.E. Sibusisiwe Mngomezulu, noted that hosting the assembly reflects the Kingdom’s expanding diplomatic footprint and its role in fostering dialogue between regions and institutions.

MICE tourism remains one of the highest-value segments of the global travel industry, with business travellers typically spending more and engaging more deeply with destinations. Events of this scale not only stimulate immediate economic activity but also enhance long-term destination branding, often encouraging repeat visits and investment interest.

The Parliament of Eswatini is leading the hosting arrangements, supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and other government institutions. This coordinated national effort underscores the country’s readiness to deliver world-class events and manage complex international logistics.
