SNAKE SEASON BEGINS: MTPA URGES TRAVELLERS TO STAY VIGILANT

By Tlalane Dlamini

As temperatures rise across the region, the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency (MTPA) is urging residents and visitors to remain vigilant as warmer spring and summer conditions bring increased snake activity.

For travellers from Eswatini planning getaways to Mpumalanga, whether exploring the Kruger National Park, travelling along the scenic Panorama Route or visiting Mbombela, the message is clear: enjoy the outdoors, but take precautions.

WARMER WEATHER BRINGS INCREASED SNAKE ACTIVITY

According to the MTPA, snakes become more active as temperatures rise. Encounters are not limited to wilderness areas, as snakes may also be found in residential neighbourhoods, gardens and other outdoor spaces.

This means travellers should remain alert even when staying at lodges, campsites, guesthouses and other accommodation facilities.

MTPA SHARES SNAKE SAFETY TIPS

The agency has urged the public to avoid approaching, provoking or attempting to kill snakes, warning that such actions can increase the risk of being bitten.

People are also encouraged to keep their surroundings clean and tidy, as rubbish piles and accumulated materials can provide hiding places for snakes.

Visitors exploring outdoor areas should exercise caution, particularly when walking through tall grass or unfamiliar terrain. Anyone who encounters a snake should keep a safe distance and contact a trained snake handler or the relevant authorities for assistance.

WHAT TO DO IN CASE OF A SNAKEBITE

The MTPA has stressed the importance of seeking medical attention immediately if someone is bitten by a snake.

Members of the public are warned against attempting to cut the wound, suck out venom or apply a tourniquet. Instead, they should seek urgent professional medical assistance.

EMERGENCY CONTACT FOR TRAVELLERS

Travellers requiring snake removal assistance can contact MTPA snake catcher Mr Chris Hobkirk on 082 372 3350. Those calling from Eswatini can dial +27 82 372 3350.

Visitors are encouraged to save the contact number before travelling to Mpumalanga and to familiarise themselves with the location of the nearest medical facility.

RESPECT WILDLIFE WHILE ENJOYING THE OUTDOORS

The MTPA has reminded the public that snakes play an important role in maintaining ecological balance and should be treated with caution and respect.

For travellers from Eswatini, remaining alert, avoiding unnecessary contact with snakes and knowing whom to contact in an emergency can help ensure a safer and more enjoyable holiday experience.

As the region enters the warmer months, the agency continues to emphasise the importance of protecting both people and wildlife.
