EZULWINI – Sibusiso Nhleko is set to launch his new book, The Elephant in the Boardroom: The Silent Killers of Good Governance, at Bethel Court, Ezulwini, on October 23, 2026.
The book examines why organisations can have strong policies, regulations and governance frameworks yet still experience serious failures.
“Organisations rarely fail because they lack policies, regulations or governance frameworks,” says Nhleko. “They fail because we see problems but choose not to confront them.”
He identifies fear, silence, greed, conflicts of interest and toxic organisational cultures as the “elephants” in the boardroom, issues that are often visible but rarely addressed.
For Nhleko, remaining silent in the face of wrongdoing carries consequences.
“Silence is never neutral,” he says.
The book argues that good governance requires more than compliance. It requires courageous leadership, ethical conviction and the willingness to speak truth to power.

“Governance lives and dies through human character,” Nhleko says. “Strong institutions are built when leaders choose integrity over convenience, accountability over self-interest, and courage over silence.”
Two major themes run throughout the book. Chapters including The Anatomy of Silence and Courage: The Cornerstone of Good Governance explore why intelligent, experienced and well-meaning leaders sometimes fail to speak up.
Drawing on psychology, governance case studies and personal experience, Nhleko examines how fear, groupthink, organisational politics and the desire for acceptance can silence capable leaders. He also offers practical strategies for developing the courage to act.
The book further explores psychological safety and ethical organisational culture, arguing that organisations flourish when people feel safe to raise concerns, challenge assumptions and speak openly without fear of punishment.
Nhleko combines global governance scandals, theory, practical lessons and personal boardroom experiences to examine the human realities behind governance failures.
“The greatest threats to governance are usually not legal deficiencies but leadership failures,” he says.
The book is aimed at directors, CEOs, executives, governance professionals, company secretaries, regulators, policymakers, auditors, risk and compliance professionals and public sector leaders. It also targets academics, university students and young professionals.
The launch begins at 5:30 PM on October 23, 2026.
Nhleko will share key messages from the book before a panel discussion titled “The Cost of Silence: When Good People Know but Do Not Speak – Building Courage, Psychological Safety and Good Governance.”
Panel members will be announced in due course. Guests can also expect live music, networking and dinner.
