UBOMBO HIKING CHALLENGE BLENDS WELLNESS, TOURISM AND COMMUNITY

BIG BEND, Eswatini – As the misty morning broke over the Lubombo Mountain range on August 8, 2026, hiking enthusiasts gathered at the foot of the the mountain; Mkhalamfene for the annual Ubombo Hiking Challenge, transforming the scenic landscape into a vibrant hub of fitness, community spirit and social impact.

Organised by Ubombo Sugar and driven by the company’s Wellness Champions, the event has evolved into one of Eswatini’s premier outdoor experiences, attracting participants from across the country and beyond. What began as a fundraising initiative for community support initiatives, has become a unique blend of adventure, wellness promotion and community development.

The hike offered participants an opportunity to conquer the rugged slopes that form part of the natural border between Eswatini and South Africa. Along the trail, hikers encouraged one another through challenging sections, while breathtaking views from the summit rewarded their efforts.

Addressing participants, Ubombo Sugar Head of Corporate Affairs Leonard Ndzimandze described the challenge as a reflection of the company’s commitment to giving back to communities.
“Together, we can achieve great things and create a positive impact on our community. Every step we take brings us closer to making a real difference,” he said.

The event also drew strong institutional support. Crookes Plantations registered the largest delegation with 194 participants, followed by the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office with 140. Eclipse Environmental Solutions contributed 80 hikers, while the Ministry of Public Works and Transport and Canterbury each fielded 70 participants.

Inclusiveness
One of the most notable highlights was the participation of visually impaired individuals who joined the hike through the support of the Deputy Prime Minister’s Office Disability Unit. Their inclusion underscored the event’s commitment to ensuring that outdoor activities and community experiences are accessible to all members of society, regardless of physical ability.
Representing Lubombo Regional Administrator Themba Msibi, Member of Parliament Futhi Ngcamphalala praised Ubombo Sugar for using the event to promote healthy living, community support, while showcasing the region’s natural beauty.

Another inspiring feature of the event was the participation of young children who successfully tackled the demanding route. Their determination captured the admiration of fellow hikers and served as a reminder that adventure and perseverance know no age limits.

Economic benefits
The economic benefits of the hike were equally visible. Nearly 20 vendor stalls lined the event grounds, creating business opportunities for local entrepreneurs. Vendors sold a variety of products ranging from refreshments and fast foods to raw meat for braai enthusiasts.

To enhance the experience, Ubombo Sugar provided braai stands and firewood, encouraging participants to relax, socialise and enjoy outdoor dining after completing the trek. The festive atmosphere extended well beyond the hike itself, turning the venue into a bustling social and commercial gathering.

As the last hikers descended from the mountain and braai fires crackled across the venue, the 2026 Ubombo Hiking Challenge once again demonstrated why it has become one of the region’s most anticipated outdoor events. It showcased the power of wellness, inclusion, tourism and community partnership in creating memorable experiences .
