MBABANE – Pigg’s Peak celebrated Eswatini’s cultural heritage, creativity and community pride as Gobolondlo hosted an inter-wards cultural competition, with Mayor Sipho Shongwe declaring the event an annual celebration.

The gathering brought together different wards in a vibrant showcase of traditional performances, fashion, pageantry and local talent, providing a platform for communities to celebrate their identity and preserve their cultural heritage.

Member of Parliament for Pigg’s Peak Constituency Jabulani Mabuza emphasised the importance of embracing one’s roots, reminding attendees that “culture defines who you are.”

Mabuza commended ward leaders for creating an inclusive platform where residents could showcase their cultural abilities. He also recognised Pigg’s Peak Town Council and the Eswatini National Council of Arts and Culture (ENCAC) for supporting the initiative.

The declaration by Mayor Shongwe that the competition would become an annual event marks an opportunity to strengthen cultural participation and establish the gathering as a recurring feature on the town’s events calendar.

LOCAL CREATIVES IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Beyond traditional performances, local fashion designer Kwanda Dlamini showcased her designs, highlighting the contribution of homegrown creatives to Eswatini’s growing fashion industry.

Pageantry added glamour to the programme, with Hhohho Pageantry director Kwazile Masimula introducing titleholders to the audience. Their participation highlighted confidence, presentation and leadership among young people.

ENCAC Chief Executive Officer Stanley Dlamini praised Pigg’s Peak Town Council for hosting the initiative and encouraged other towns to introduce similar cultural programmes.

His call underscored the potential of community events to nurture emerging talent, encourage participation in the arts and safeguard traditions for future generations.

CULTURE AS A TOURISM ATTRACTION

The Gobolondlo celebration demonstrated how cultural events can bring communities together while creating opportunities for local artists and designers to gain recognition.

With the competition set to become an annual event, Pigg’s Peak has an opportunity to develop a distinctive cultural attraction that draws performers, families and visitors from beyond the town.

For travellers, such gatherings offer an authentic glimpse into the traditions, creativity and community spirit that shape Eswatini’s cultural identity.

The event placed culture firmly on Pigg’s Peak’s entertainment calendar while reinforcing the importance of preserving the Kingdom’s heritage.
