MBABANE HOSTS AFRICA’S DOCTOR OF COMEDY

Eswatini continues to position itself as a vibrant destination for arts, culture, and live entertainment, and the upcoming performance by Ugandan comedy sensation Dr Hilary Okello highlights the Kingdom’s growing appeal beyond its scenic landscapes.

Set for May 28, 2026 at 7pm at the Mbabane Theater Club, Jokes From Far Away will bring one of Africa’s most celebrated stand-up comedians to local audiences, reinforcing Mbabane’s reputation as a hub for live performance and cultural exchange.

Dr Hilary Okello is widely regarded as Uganda’s finest stand-up comedian and Africa’s “Doctor of Comedy.” A former medical professional, he traded his stethoscope for a microphone, a bold move that has earned him recognition across the continent.

Since launching his career in 2017, he has performed on major platforms including Fun Factory, Comedy Store, and Africa Laughs. That same year, he ranked among the top five in the Next Top Comedian competition at Theatre Labonita, marking his breakthrough. In 2018, he reached the semi-finals of the NBS The Comic competition, gaining national television exposure.

As an ambassador of Ugandan comedy, Dr Hilary has taken his talent across Africa, performing in Rwanda, Kenya, South Sudan, and Zambia. His growing footprint includes appearances at major festivals and international comedy showcases.

With three successful live-recorded specials at the Uganda National Theatre, as well as TV features on Comedy Store NTV, Pablo Live, and The Salvador Show on Pearl Magic, his influence continues to rise. He has also contributed to the Senkyu Boss series on Showmax and ventured into acting, while co-founding Kampala’s popular comedy club, The Laughing Maraboustork.

For Eswatini, hosting talent of this calibre signals an evolving events landscape attractive to both locals and visitors seeking authentic cultural experiences.

Local comedian Dr Shakes said that comedy in Eswatini is alive and growing. Events like this not only entertain but also inspire local talent.

“We have the stories and the humour, what we need is more platforms.” he said.
