KING MSWATI III INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT SEZ TARGETS TOURISM AND INVESTMENT GROWTH

BY TLALANE DLAMINI

MBABANE – Eswatini is positioning King Mswati III International Airport as a gateway to tourism expansion and investment, with a proposed Special Economic Zone (SEZ) expected to create opportunities across hospitality, logistics, agro-processing and manufacturing.

The Eswatini Civil Aviation Authority (ESWACAA) is inviting investors to participate in developing the SEZ and associated commercial projects, with the vision of transforming the airport precinct into an economic hub linking tourism, trade and industrial development.

ESWACAA Manager Business Development Richard Dlamini said the airport’s strategic location presents an opportunity to attract investment that supports Eswatini’s tourism ambitions while creating new economic opportunities.

The proposed development could encourage businesses and infrastructure around the airport, opening opportunities for hospitality establishments, tourism services, transport operators and enterprises serving visitors and business travellers.

Globally, airports have evolved beyond transportation facilities into catalysts for economic growth, supporting tourism, trade, manufacturing and logistics. Through the proposed SEZ, Eswatini seeks to capitalise on this model by leveraging the airport’s international connectivity and strategic position in Southern Africa.

For the tourism sector, investment in hospitality, transport and supporting infrastructure could strengthen the visitor economy and improve the country’s capacity to accommodate tourists, business travellers and investors exploring Eswatini’s cultural heritage, wildlife and natural attractions.

Beyond tourism, the proposed zone offers opportunities in agro-processing, pharmaceutical manufacturing and logistics. Potential projects include cargo terminals, cold storage facilities and regional freight-forwarding operations, which could improve access to regional and international markets.

These developments could strengthen supply chains and create linkages between tourism, agriculture, manufacturing and transport. Local businesses could also benefit from opportunities to supply goods and services to investors, operators and visitors.

The investment proposition extends to renewable energy and environmental infrastructure, with potential projects including solar farms, sanitary landfill facilities and recycling operations. Such investments could support sustainable development while meeting the infrastructure needs of a growing commercial and industrial precinct.

Anticipated economic benefits include employment creation, skills development, revenue generation and increased participation by local enterprises. The initiative could also diversify Eswatini’s economy by attracting investment into industries that complement its existing tourism and industrial sectors.

For investors, the proposed SEZ presents an opportunity to participate in developing businesses and infrastructure around an international airport, with prospects spanning tourism, logistics, manufacturing and sustainable energy.

As Eswatini seeks to expand its tourism offering and attract new investment, the airport precinct could connect the country’s visitor economy with wider commercial activity. Realising this potential will depend on infrastructure development, investor participation and the establishment of viable businesses capable of delivering sustainable economic returns.
