ESWATINI STEPS UP E-WASTE MANAGEMENT TO PROTECT TOURISM APPEAL

EZULWINI – Eswatini is strengthening efforts to improve the management of electronic waste as the country moves to enhance standards governing electrical and electronic equipment and appliances, with environmental sustainability remaining critical to protecting its tourism appeal.

The issue was discussed during a stakeholder engagement forum on the Draft Regulations for the Enforcement of Electrical and Electronic Equipment and Appliances Standards, held at Sibane Sami Hotel in Ezulwini today.

The growing volume of electronic waste generated by everyday electrical and electronic products was highlighted by Eswatini Energy Regulatory Authority (ESERA) Electricity Regulation Engineer Ncamiso Nkambule, who pointed to commonly used items such as chargers and multi-plugs as part of the growing stream of e-waste requiring proper management.

As electronic equipment becomes increasingly prevalent in homes, businesses and other establishments, its disposal presents growing environmental challenges. The proposed regulations are expected to provide a stronger framework for enforcing standards governing electrical and electronic equipment and appliances, while promoting greater accountability in their use and disposal.

The stakeholder engagement provided participants with an opportunity to examine the draft regulations, seek clarification and contribute recommendations on their implementation and enforcement.

For Eswatini’s tourism sector, responsible e-waste management extends beyond regulatory compliance. The Kingdom’s natural landscapes, clean surroundings and environmental quality are central to its appeal as a tourism destination. Protecting these assets therefore requires sustainable practices across all sectors of the economy.

Improved management of electronic waste could help reduce the environmental impact of discarded equipment while contributing to broader national efforts to build a cleaner, healthier and more sustainable Eswatini.

As the country continues to position itself as a destination for nature, culture and outdoor experiences, strengthening environmental management will be essential to preserving the natural assets and visitor experience that underpin Eswatini’s tourism appeal.
