NEDBANK CELEBRATES AFRICA DAY THROUGH CUISINE

There is something deeply powerful about a nation coming together over food. On Saturday, May 23, 2026, Nedbank Eswatini did exactly that, transforming the picturesque Sharma House Boma in Ezulwini into a vibrant arena of culinary excellence, cultural celebration and sheer African pride, with the inaugural NedKitchen Challenge.

Hosted as part of Africa Month celebrations and perfectly timed ahead of Africa Day on 25 May, the event saw four Nedbank staff teams go head-to-head in a spirited cook-off, each preparing a selection of authentic African dishes that not only impressed the judging panel but left every single person in attendance with a full stomach and an even fuller heart.

A Vision Rooted in Culture and Connection

The NedKitchen Challenge was not simply a cook-off. It was a statement. Nedbank Eswatini Managing Director Fikile Nkhosi articulated clearly why Africa Month provided the perfect backdrop for a celebration of this nature. For Nkhosi, food is one of the most powerful expressions of African identity and the NedKitchen Challenge was Nedbank’s way of honouring that identity, right from within its own walls.

Nkhosi did not just speak about the event from a distance. In a moment that drew admiration from all in attendance, the MD personally joined the judging panel as they made their rounds, walking from station to station, tasting each dish and listening attentively as the competing teams described what they had prepared and the inspiration behind their menus. It was leadership in its most human form, present, engaged and genuinely invested.

Africa on a Plate

The four competing teams brought extraordinary culinary talent to the Boma, serving up a rich and diverse variety of authentic African dishes that celebrated the breadth and beauty of the continent’s food heritage. From seasoning to plating, the skill on display was remarkable, a testament to the hidden talents that exist within the walls of Nedbank Eswatini.

Each team took time to describe their dishes to the judges and the MD, passionately explaining the story behind every recipe and the cultural significance of the food they had prepared. It was storytelling through cuisine and it was beautiful.

We must be honest: no photograph taken on the day could ever do justice to how the food tasted. The aromas alone were enough to draw every attendee closer and once the tasting began, it was clear that this was a cook-off of the highest order.
