MBABANE – When flames threaten a home or an accident leaves someone trapped, firefighters are often the first to rush towards danger while others seek safety. On Monday, October 19, Eswatini will honour these everyday heroes as the Eswatini National Fire, Rescue and Emergency Service marks National Fire Day at Matsapha International Airport, with live rescue demonstrations and fire safety exhibitions among the highlights.
The commemoration will celebrate the service’s 51-year history, showcase its life-saving operations and raise public awareness about fire prevention and emergency preparedness.

Guided by this year’s theme, “Advancing Fire Safety, Rescue and National Service in the Spirit of Agape Love,” the event will recognise the courage, dedication and sacrifices of firefighters who work tirelessly to protect lives and property across the Kingdom.
For firefighters, an emergency can mean leaving their families behind at a moment’s notice to respond to someone else’s crisis. Whether battling a blaze, attending to road accidents or rescuing people trapped in dangerous situations, their work demands courage, teamwork and the ability to make critical decisions under intense pressure.
The service’s responsibilities extend beyond firefighting to include rescue operations, fire prevention and public education. Through these efforts, emergency responders help communities understand risks, prevent avoidable incidents and respond more effectively when disaster strikes.
At Monday’s commemoration, visitors will have an opportunity to witness live rescue demonstrations and explore fire safety exhibitions that offer a closer look at the work of emergency personnel.
Beyond showcasing the skills and equipment used by firefighters, the activities will highlight the importance of emergency preparedness and the practical steps individuals can take to protect themselves and others.
The theme’s emphasis on agape love, understood as selfless and unconditional love, reflects the spirit of service demonstrated by emergency responders who place the safety and well-being of others at the heart of their work.
However, protecting lives and property is a shared responsibility. Families, businesses, schools and communities can all play a role by identifying potential fire hazards, practising safe habits, keeping emergency exits clear and reporting incidents promptly.
As the service marks 51 years of dedicated service, National Fire Day offers an opportunity for the nation to recognise the men and women who run towards danger to save lives.
It also serves as a reminder that fire safety begins long before an emergency occurs, with awareness, preparedness and a collective commitment to protecting lives.
