BUCIE’S FOOD EXPO IS ELEVATING ESWATINI’S CULINARY TOURISM

In the heart of Eswatini, where warm hospitality is as rich as the landscapes, food continues to play a powerful role in bringing people together. At the centre of this culinary movement is Busisiwe Ngabisa Mthethwa, affectionately known as Bucie, a passionate food entrepreneur whose journey from survival to success is inspiring a new wave of food tourism.

Born and raised in Luyengo, Bucie’s story is deeply rooted in resilience. “Growing up, I never had the chance of dreaming or choosing what I wanted to be. I was always in survival mode,” she reflects. It was in the kitchen out of necessity that she discovered her passion. Over time, that passion transformed into purpose, and eventually into a thriving business.

Eswatini’s food culture, Bucie explains, is both diverse and deeply authentic. “It is rich, flavourful, and offers a wide variety,” she says. While many dishes may be found across Africa, she believes the Swazi touch makes it truly unique. “Our cuisine may exist elsewhere, but it can never be prepared or served the same way we do.”

This distinct culinary identity is something Bucie has dedicated herself to showcasing through Bucie’s Food Expo, an annual event that has grown steadily over the past four years. What began as small gatherings with friends has evolved into a highly anticipated culinary experience. “I realised how food brings people together and creates meaningful conversations,” she says.

Today, the Food Expo is more than just an event, it is a platform that contributes to positioning Eswatini as an emerging culinary tourism destination. With growing interest not only locally but also from neighbouring countries such as South Africa and Mozambique, the expo is becoming a key highlight on the regional tourism calendar.

As anticipation builds for the 2026 edition on June 27, 2026, Bucie promises an even more exciting experience. Guests can expect a blend of traditional and modern cuisine, reflecting the evolving nature of the food industry. “We are adapting with the times while still honouring our roots,” she explains.

Like many entrepreneurs, Bucie’s journey has not been without challenges. In a highly competitive and saturated culinary market, building trust with customers has proven to be one of the biggest hurdles. Yet, her commitment to quality, cleanliness, and authenticity continues to set her apart. “What keeps me motivated is knowing that I offer a unique and reliable service,” she says.

Looking ahead, Bucie’s vision extends far beyond the expo. She aims to expand Bucie’s Kitchen into a nationwide brand, with a presence in every town across Eswatini. More importantly, she hopes to nurture a new generation of resilient, purpose-driven individuals within her team.

Through her work, Bucie is not only sharing food, she is telling stories, building community, and redefining what culinary tourism can look like in Eswatini. And as her journey continues, one thing is clear: the kitchen that once helped her survive is now helping her and her country thrive.
