ESWATINI TAKES 2026 EVENTS CALENDAR TO MAPUTO, STRENGTHENING TOURISM TIES WITH MOZAMBIQUE

By Tlalane Dlamini

MAPUTO, MOZAMBIQUE – Eswatini has taken its 2026 Events Calendar to Mozambique, using a high-level tourism activation in Maputo to strengthen engagement with one of the Kingdom’s key regional source markets and encourage increased travel across the border.

The Eswatini Events Calendar Activation, held on 10 August 2026 at Cardoso Hotel in Maputo, brought together tourism stakeholders, event organisers, tour operators, bikers and members of the media from both countries.

The activation provided a platform for Eswatini’s tourism and events industry to showcase the Kingdom’s upcoming calendar while connecting directly with Mozambican travel trade and media.

Speaking at the event, His Excellency Mlondi Dlamini, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Eswatini to Mozambique, said the activation was aimed at reaffirming that Eswatini stands ready to welcome Mozambican visitors to experience its diverse tourism offering.

“The aim of today’s event is to reaffirm and remind you that the Kingdom of Eswatini stands ready, once again, to welcome you,” Ambassador Dlamini said, highlighting the Kingdom’s unique and diverse tourism experiences.

AUGUST MARKS THE START OF PEAK TOURISM SEASON

Ambassador Dlamini noted that 1 August marks the genesis of Eswatini’s peak tourism season, with warmer weather creating an attractive environment for national, regional and international travellers seeking a break in the Kingdom.

He further pointed to the importance of the Triland Agreement, which seeks to inspire coordinated efforts to promote the Eswatini–Mpumalanga–Mozambique route as a regional destination of choice.

The timing of the activation therefore places Eswatini’s events calendar at the heart of the country’s peak tourism period, providing travellers with additional reasons to visit and explore the Kingdom.

A CALENDAR PACKED WITH EXPERIENCES

Among the anticipated events highlighted by the Ambassador are the Umhlanga Reed Dance, International Trade Fair, Swazi Rally, Kings Golf Cup Tournament, Mlawula Campfire Festival, Imbube Marathon, The Farmer’s Market and Swazi Polo, among others.

These events form part of Eswatini’s broader tourism offering, combining culture, sport, entertainment, business and lifestyle experiences that can appeal to different segments of the regional travel market.

The Maputo activation gave event organisers and tourism businesses an opportunity to unpack their respective offerings, while Mozambican tour operators, travel agencies and media gained insight into what is on offer during the upcoming season.

MOZAMBIQUE REMAINS A KEY SOURCE MARKET

The Ambassador also highlighted the strong contribution of Mozambique to Eswatini’s tourism arrivals.

According to the June tourism statistics referenced in his remarks, Mozambique recorded 22,843 visitors to Eswatini, representing a 30.9% increase. Mozambique was also identified alongside South Africa as one of the Kingdom’s highest contributors to visitor numbers.

The figures reinforce the importance of maintaining consistent engagement with the Mozambican market.

Ambassador Dlamini said this makes it imperative for the Eswatini Tourism Authority to continue visiting Mozambique annually to update the market on developments within the tourism sector and the evolving catalogue of tourism products and events appealing to Mozambican travellers.

TOURISM ARRIVALS CONTINUE TO GROW

The Ambassador further revealed that international visitor arrivals to Eswatini reached 562,920 during the first half of 2026, an 8.3% increase compared with 519,659 arrivals recorded during the same period in 2025.

This represents an additional 43,261 visitors, pointing to continued growth in the Kingdom’s tourism sector and reinforcing the positive recovery trajectory following the pandemic period.

TURNING BORDERS INTO BRIDGES

Beyond promoting individual events, Ambassador Dlamini positioned the activation as part of a broader regional tourism and economic cooperation agenda.

He described the Events Calendar activation and advancement of the Triland initiative as “a strategic investment in our shared future,” emphasising the need to transform borders from barriers into bridges and shared opportunities into drivers of regional prosperity.

He extended an invitation to business and leisure tourists from Mozambique and Mpumalanga, assuring them that Eswatini remains committed to supporting their events and tourism offerings through collaborative marketing under the Triland Agreement.

“We are confident that this exercise will draw tourists from Mozambique to the Kingdom of Eswatini,” he said.

MEDIA AND TRAVEL TRADE CRITICAL TO THE CAMPAIGN

The activation also placed emphasis on the role of the media and travel trade in converting destination awareness into actual travel.

Ambassador Dlamini thanked the media for bringing tourism experiences closer to audiences through coverage and reviews, noting that their role is key in stimulating tourism and highlighting the sector’s contribution to economic and social development.

For the travel trade, the activation offered an opportunity to build relationships with Eswatini’s tourism industry and identify potential partnerships around events, accommodation, tours and travel packages.

A REGIONAL INVITATION

As Eswatini enters its peak tourism season, the Maputo activation sends a clear invitation to the Mozambican market: come and experience the Kingdom.

With a strong events calendar, growing visitor numbers and an ongoing commitment to regional collaboration, Eswatini is positioning its events not merely as standalone occasions, but as tourism products capable of driving cross-border travel.

For Eswatini and Mozambique, the opportunity extends beyond individual events. It is about building stronger tourism corridors, encouraging greater movement between neighbouring destinations and creating shared economic opportunities.

As Ambassador Dlamini concluded, “A Royal Experience Awaits.”
